“Temporary does not mean low risk”: Malaysian engineering firm challenges how industry handles structural transport

On 22 April 2026, MIDAS IT held a technical seminar in Kuala Lumpur to launch their MIDAS Gen NX structural analysis software. Anthony V Sekaran, Founder of Sekaran Technical Services (STS), was invited to speak as a practitioner. An IEng with the UK Engineering Council and over 30 years in heavy transport engineering, marine operations, and infrastructure, his session had one argument: the transport phase of large structures, lifting, Ro-Ro, marine barge, and SPMT land moves, produces worse structural load conditions that the industry may not be aware of. Anthony backed this with his field practice and a detailed case study on the Youtefa Bridge in Papua, a tied arch bridge transported fully assembled across 3,200 kilometres by barge, where marine and lifting loads governed the structural design, not the traffic loads the bridge carries today.
